You can start carrying your baby in a sling right from birth, provided the baby is healthy and is carried safely. For many families, the sling becomes a natural way to bond with their baby whilst enjoying greater freedom of movement in their daily lives.

It’s quite common to feel a bit awkward the first few times you tie the sling. Give yourself time to practise – most people find that tying it becomes much easier after a few attempts. It’s a good idea to start by practising the knot on a doll or a soft toy before putting your child in it. This can help you feel more confident with the technique.

The first time you carry your baby, it’s a good idea to choose a quiet moment when they’re full, content and have a fresh nappy. Once your baby is in the sling, you can check that they’re in an ergonomic position, that their airways are clear and that the sling provides firm support. Feel free to walk around for a while. The movement and closeness often help the baby to settle down.

Newborns are carried facing the person carrying them. In this position, the baby’s head and body are supported, whilst they can feel your warmth, hear your heartbeat and follow your movements. This close contact promotes a sense of security and facilitates bonding between you and your baby. Once both you and your baby have got used to the baby sling, many people find it one of the best ways to soothe a sad or anxious baby.

If your baby seems unhappy in the sling, try checking that they are comfortable and in a good position. Sometimes the sling needs adjusting; sometimes the baby needs feeding, a break or a fresh nappy. Some babies also become calmer when carried by another family member. With a little patience, both you and your baby will usually find a way of carrying that feels safe and comfortable.

There are several different ways to tie a baby sling, and different styles may suit different families. Choose the method that feels comfortable and safe for both you and your child. If, despite several attempts, you’re finding it difficult to get the knot right, it may be worth asking for help. Many retailers offer instructions or guidance, and you can also seek help from a certified babywearing consultant.
