Many children become curious about their surroundings as they get older and are keen to see more of the world around them. At the same time, it is important to remember that a child\u2019s need for closeness, support and security remains strong even as their desire to explore grows.<\/p>\n<h2 data-assistant-stream-block=\"\" data-assistant-stream-block-index=\"4\">When is a child ready to sit facing forwards?<\/h2>\n<p data-assistant-stream-block=\"\" data-assistant-stream-block-index=\"5\">There is no specific age at which all children are ready to be carried facing forwards. Children develop at different rates, and the most important thing is that the child has sufficient body control and stability to be able to sit safely.<\/p>\n<p data-assistant-stream-block=\"\" data-assistant-stream-block-index=\"6\">Before a child is carried facing forwards, they must be able to:<\/p>\n<ul data-assistant-stream-block=\"\" data-assistant-stream-block-index=\"7\">\n<li>keep your head steady without support<\/li>\n<li>have good control over their core and upper body<\/li>\n<li>sit securely with support<\/li>\n<li>be able to show an interest in their surroundings and a desire to discover more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-assistant-stream-block=\"\" data-assistant-stream-block-index=\"8\">For many children, this development takes place sometime after they are about six months old, but this can vary.<\/p>\n<h2 data-assistant-stream-block=\"\" data-assistant-stream-block-index=\"9\">When the child wants to see more<\/h2>\n<p data-assistant-stream-block=\"\" data-assistant-stream-block-index=\"10\">It is common for children around six months old to start showing greater interest in their surroundings. They want to follow what is happening, see what you are doing and be involved in the family\u2019s daily life. This does not always mean that the child needs to sit facing forwards.<\/p>\n<p data-assistant-stream-block=\"\" data-assistant-stream-block-index=\"11\">Many children prefer, instead, to continue being carried facing the person carrying them, but in a higher position where they can look over their shoulder and keep an eye on what\u2019s going on. This way, the child enjoys both closeness and the chance to discover the world at their own pace.<\/p>\n<h2 data-assistant-stream-block=\"\" data-assistant-stream-block-index=\"12\">Why is closeness still important?<\/h2>\n<p data-assistant-stream-block=\"\" data-assistant-stream-block-index=\"13\">Even as the child grows older, the need for security and closeness remains. Facing the person carrying them allows the child to seek eye contact, rest when there are too many stimuli, and get help regulating their emotions.<\/p>\n<p data-assistant-stream-block=\"\" data-assistant-stream-block-index=\"14\">When your child is sitting facing you, it\u2019s also easier to pick up on their cues and see if they need a break, something to eat or some cuddles.<\/p>\n<h2 data-assistant-stream-block=\"\" data-assistant-stream-block-index=\"15\">If the child is carried facing forwards<\/h2>\n<p data-assistant-stream-block=\"\" data-assistant-stream-block-index=\"16\">If you choose to carry your child facing forwards, it is important to follow the recommendations for the specific carrier you are using. Your child should have good support for their body and be able to move freely.<\/p>\n<p data-assistant-stream-block=\"\" data-assistant-stream-block-index=\"17\">Also bear in mind that carrying your child facing forwards exposes them to lots of new experiences. It\u2019s a good idea to start with shorter periods and pay attention to your child\u2019s cues.
